WESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE COLLEGE CHEERLEADING
GUIDELINES
The WOSC cheerleading squad will be made up of the top
scores from tryouts. WOSC cheerleaders should promote
sportsmanship within our school and towards other schools. CHEERLEADERS
ARE EXPECTED TO ABIDE BY THE GUIDELINES AND RULES SET BY THE SCHOOL AND
COACH. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN SUSPENSION OR DISMISSAL FROM THE
SQUAD.
These guidelines were established for one or more of the following
reasons:
• To ensure the safety of each cheerleader
• To ensure that the squad and its members project a positive image
• To establish fairness and equality of responsibility
• To develop and ensure continuing unity within the squad
• To promote the development of the best cheerleading squad possible
ELIGIBILITY
1. Students who will be enrolled as a full-time college student at WOSC
for
the 2006-2007 school year are eligible to try out.
2. Students must attend cheer clinic to be eligible to tryout
for the squad.
3. Academics are a priority. A 2.0 minimum GPA is required and must be
maintained once selected.
LEADERSHIP
1. Cheerleaders should recognize and be willing to assume all
responsibilities which accompany being selected to the squad.
2. Bickering within the squad will not be tolerated! Personal problems
or disagreements not involving cheerleading are not to be brought to
cheerleading. We are a team and will conduct ourselves as such.
3. Cheerleaders will display good sportsmanship and project a positive
image both in and out of uniform. This applies to language, fighting,
attendance, drinking, smoking, drugs, dishonesty, and immodest or
immoral conduct. Any behavior which would reflect poorly on the rest of
the squad will warrant disciplinary action and possibly suspension.
GAMES/PRACTICES
1. Cheerleaders must be present at all scheduled practices and games.
Practices are closed. You will receive a schedule for practice/game
times… don’t be late. Disciplinary action will be taken if you are late.
Possible actions may include extra conditioning, removal from cheering a
game, or anything else the coach deems reasonable. Three unexcused
misses will result in dismissal from the squad.
2. Illness or family emergency is the only reason a cheerleader should
miss a practice or performance and must be cleared through the coach.
Other conflicts should be discussed with the coach in advance of
absence.
3. Cheerleading requires time and effort. All practices and home
basketball games are mandatory! Appointments and work must be planned
around the practice and game schedule.
4. Due to the risk involved in cheerleading activities the following
rule will be enforced: NO COACH, NO PRACTICE!
APPEARANCE/UNIFORMS
1. Hair must be in a ponytail with a secure holder at all practices,
games, and activities in uniform.
2. Absolutely no jewelry will be worn during games, practices, or
activities in uniform.
3. Uniforms will not be bought, altered, planned, or worn without the
permission of the coach. Cheerleaders are not to loan out any part of a
uniform to anyone. Windsuits, jackets, and shoes are considered
uniforms!
4. Uniforms should be cleaned after every game so they will be ready for
the next activity.
5. Uniforms will be dry cleaned and returned to the school at the end of
the year in good condition or you must pay for damages or replace them.
INJURIES
1. Injuries and medical concerns should be reported to the coach and
reoccurring problems should be evaluated by a physician. A member is not
allowed to resume cheerleading participation until they are cleared in
writing by a physician.
2. If a cheerleader is unable to practice or perform due to injury, a
doctor’s note is required. If, after a reasonable amount of time, a
cheerleader has not seen a doctor, a cheerleader may face dismissal.
SCHOLARSHIPS
1. Each cheerleader will be awarded a $500 tuition and fees scholarship.
This entire scholarship will be applied to the spring semester’s tuition
and fees.
2. An additional book allowance will be awarded for the fall semester to
each cheerleader as well.
CAMP
1. Camp is mandatory! More information will be given after tryouts.
2. Some expenses may be the cheerleaders’ responsibility for camp
activities and clothing. This will be determined after tryouts.
3. Any practices prior to camp will be mandatory for all cheerleaders.
MISCELLANEOUS
1. Cheerleaders will be expected to actively participate in any/all
fundraising for the squad. These events will be decided upon after the
new squad is selected.
2. Cheerleaders will be required and expected to participate in all
organizational competitions for both the fall and spring semester.
3. Cheerleaders will participate in the annual Altus Christmas Parade
held in December, as representatives of Western Oklahoma State College
and the community.
4. Cheerleading is an athletic activity. Regular conditioning is
expected and required. Weightlifting and cardiovascular workouts will be
part of weekly practices. Being out of condition jeopardizes your health
as well as the well being of other squad members.
