The second and third graders at Reading Renaissance listen
with interest as WOSC Rodeo Team member Ty Smith
(standing)
taughtthe children about Oklahoma cowboys,
horses, and
roping.
Student athletes Ty Smith and Rhett Ridling made
presentations for second and third graders at Washington
Elementary enrolled in the after-school program sponsored by
the Great Plains Literacy Council. The theme for the
2007-2008 Reading Renaissance has been "Oklahoma Pride."
The children learned about Oklahoma heritage through
reading and the cultural arts, especially with resource
speakers. Smith and Ridling, members of Western's rodeo
team, incorporated information about horses and cowboys.
They focused on the care and training of horses and how
rodeo competition is very exciting and expensive. They
explained the different kinds of equipment used with
horses and demonstrated various roping techniques.
"Cowboys and reading go hand in hand," said Ty Smith, "and
we wanted to tell the children about how important reading
is for horsemen, too."
