ACT Testing
The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education regulations
specify that all students who are admitted to an accredited
institution of higher learning in Oklahoma must take the ACT
(American College Testing) examination with the exception of
students who are over 21 or are on active military duty.
Students who have not graduated from high school or do not have a
GED but whose high school class has graduated must take the ACT
examination.
Western Oklahoma State College is a national testing center for the
American College Testing Program. The ACT test is administered
on-campus on five national test dates annually. A person need not be
a student at Western to take the national test.
The college also administers the residual ACT test on an as-needed
basis. Theresidual ACT test can only be administered to current or
potential Western students. Contact the assessment office (Room SSC
207) for further information.
Extra-institutional Credit
Extra-institutional learning is defined as learning that is attained
outside sponsorship of legally authorized and accredited
post-secondary institutions. The term applies to learning acquired
from work and life experiences, independent reading and study, the
mass media and participation in formal courses sponsored by
associations, businesses, government, industries, the military, and
unions.
Extra-institutional learning must be validated on a course-by-course
basis through methods acceptable to the Oklahoma State Regents for
Higher Education. Extra-institutional credit is only awarded in
courses for which the college is approved to offer by the Oklahoma
State Regents for Higher Education.
Extra-institutional credit may be used on degree and certificate
programs provided it is applicable to the degree or certificate. The
college will accept a total of 30 semester credit hours of extra-
institutional credit toward a degree and up to one half of the
credits required for a certificate.
Semester credit hours for all extra-institutional credit will be
added to the student's transcript upon the request of the student,
provided the student has satisfactorily completed 12 semester credit
hours in residence at Western Oklahoma State College.
The college validates extra-institutional learning through ACE
guides, Advanced Placement (AP) programs, the Council for Adult and
Experiential Learning (CAEL), other standardized guidelines, and
locally constructed and administered exams (only if available).
The specific courses for which credit is awarded will be identified
on the transcript under the heading "Extra-institutional Credit" and
the neutral grade of "S" will be used to designate credit awarded.
Charges for evaluating extra-institutional learning by means other
than nationally recognized examinations shall be by the credit hour.
