The campus of Western Oklahoma State College
is located at the intersection of Highway 283 and Tamarack Road
at the northern edge of Altus, Oklahoma, on 142 acres of land
purchased and donated by the citizens of Southwestern Oklahoma.
Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on December 8, 1973, at the
new campus site, and a three-phase construction plan was begun
in April 1974. The college occupied the present campus in
January 1976.
The physical plant building was designed as an educational mall.
The 230,000 square feet complex is air-conditioned and equipped
with modern furnishings. The physical plant buildings include
the following: Administrative complex, classrooms, Learning
Resources and Telecommunications Center (LRTC), physical
education center (gymnasium and swimming pool), outdoor physical
recreation facilities (field house, baseball diamond, tennis
courts, and softball field), technical education center, fine
arts center, and residence hall.
The residence hall opened in the fall of 1999 with a capacity
for 96 students. The double-occupancy rooms are furnished and
include a bathroom in each room, local phone service, and basic
cable. Internet service is also available.
Great Western Dining accommodates the needs of the students
living in the new residence hall, as well as other students,
faculty, staff, and the general public. Meal tickets are
available in the business office.
The LRTC houses three interactive studios which allow delivery
of distance learning courses via OneNet and other video networks
within the area.
The new indoor hitting, pitching and conference room facility
will allow the men’s baseball and women’s softball teams to
practice indoors on Western’s campus. Located adjacent to both
the baseball and softball playing fields, the field was ready
for the fall 2000 semester.
A new 30,000+ square foot Cooperative Higher Education and
Training Facility will be built beginning in the 2007-2008
academic year. This facility will provide additional training
seminar rooms, smart classrooms and conference rooms to meet the
needs of Western and the community.
