How does an ITV Class work?

ITV courses are fully interactive college credit courses delivered via live, real-time television. Click here to visit an ITV class. Courses are taught by Western faculty in actual classrooms or computer labs just like any other college site-based course, and are broadcast live over the college's video network to a maximum of 4 other sites. Every location has video cameras, sound systems and monitors, as well as support equipment. This allows the instructor to see and hear students at any location while allowing students at any location to see and hear the instructor in real-time. Students at a distance from the instructor can fully participate in the class as if all were in the same location. Additionally, everyone can see demonstrations, share documents, graphics, three-dimensional objects, and other instructional materials over the system.

The ITV classroom is set up with cameras and microphones so that students at other locations can see and hear everything that is going on. The instructor controls which camera is in use, including a document camera that sits on the desk that can be used to view books or handouts. This class to the left is the lecture portion of a College Algebra course taught at a distance.

The instructor shown here on the left is at the Western Site and the students shown on the left monitor are at Northern Oklahoma College -Enid. Instructors advise of course structure, syllabus, and other obligations at the first class meeting. In-person and telephone conferences are held with instructors throughout the semester as the need arises.

I am not a school. Can I use the videoconferencing facilities at Western?
Yes, however there may be a charge associated with this usage. The Distance Learning Center's videoconferencing facility, located on the Western campus, is now available to collegiate departmental staff, students, and to private businesses and individuals. Our facility allows quality, two way, real time face-to-face conversations with participants in another videoconferencing facility. Our facility is intimate and pleasant, and we can generally accommodate approximately eight to ten persons at one time. The facility is multipurpose, affordable and practical.

Our facility can be used to:

  • hold small business meetings
  • conduct interviews
  • defend dissertations
  • teach classes

Videoconferencing offers many advantages. Some of these advantages include:

  • saved time
  • reduced travel expenses
  • permitted eye-to-eye contact with participating videoconference individuals
