Dr.
Cooper Ray, a well-known retired physician in Altus, was a pilot
during World War II. When the war was over, he pursued his lifelong
dream of becoming a doctor. Ray attended Altus Junior College for a
short time before medical school. After graduating in 1954 from
Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, he began his
medical practice in Altus in 1955. He was a practicing physician for
34 years and was active in community, professional, and religious
organizations. He was a member of the Jackson County Medical Society
and a member of the medical staff of Jackson County Memorial
Hospital, and served as Chief of Staff. He served on the boards of
the Oklahoma State Medical Society, the American Medical
Association, the American Board of Family Practice, and the American
Academy of Family Physicians. Ray served on the admissions board of
Oklahoma University's School of Medicine. He was active in Rotary
and a deacon in the First Baptist Church in Altus.
