In general, a student must meet the following requirements:
- Have a high school diploma, a GED, or show ability to benefit as demonstrated by passing a test approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Make satisfactory academic progress.
- Be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen.
- Be enrolled as a regular student in an eligible program (one leading to a degree or certificate) with an advisor.
- Demonstrate need as defined by an accepted system of needs analysis (as through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid), except for unsubsidized Stafford and Federal Plus loans.
- Be registered for Selective Service, if required.
- Be enrolled in a participating school.
- Sign a statement of educational purpose.
In addition:
- Federal student loans must be repaid.
- Students going to school less than half time may be eligible for federal Pell grants and some other federal student aid programs.
- Conviction of drug distribution or possession may make a student ineligible.
