Western Oklahoma State College on Altus Air Force Base
Western cares about the student. That is why we are a presence on Altus Air Force Base. Our program on base is designed for the convenience of students with erratic schedules. It is our intense desire for students to be successful. For that reason, we have staff that is willing to work with the student. If there is a reasonable way to do what needs to be done for a student, Western is willing. You are always welcome at the Western office on base. If you have questions or just need help, please contact us: Altus Air Force Base Office: 580-481-6106 doug.dalton@wosc.edu

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I receive TDY orders before the end of the class?
Our first recommendation is for the student to visit with the instructor about the problem. If there is a way that they can arrange for them to finish the class, they will try to accommodate it. But, if they cannot make arrangements, the student may bring a copy of their orders, or a letter from their commander that states that their reason for withdrawal is job-related, to the Western office on Altus Air Force Base to begin the process of official withdrawal. It is very important for you to withdraw properly. Never just assume that it will be ok to just quit attending.

What if I get into a class and it is too difficult?
Again, Western’s instructors are very accommodating, and will try to help you to handle the problem. Additionally, Western has tutorial programs available.

Can I take all the classes that I need for my degree on base?
It is not possible to offer all classes on base. For example, we cannot put laboratory facilities on base. The second problem is that science classes are much more involved. While most classes at Western are three-hour classes, science and some other classes are four and five-hour classes. It is very difficult to offer classes that are for more than three-hours credit in an eight-week format.

How does a Western degree plan fit with pursuit of the CCAF degree?
It is possible to work toward a Western degree plan and allow the courses that are taken for the Western degree to also fill requirements for the CCAF. This can be done provided that the student pursues them both at the same time.

Will the courses that I take at Western transfer to another institution?
There should be no problem with this. Western’s instructors have to meet the same requirements as those in the bigger schools. A course at Western should be as good as the same course being taught anywhere else. There should be no logical reason for them not to be acceptable at other schools. The one exception is that a college cannot accept credit in an area that it does not have an equivalent program in.

How do I decide what I want to study?
It is important to spend considerable time asking, “What can I see myself doing someday, that I could enjoy doing for a career?” Think about hobbies that you might have that might evolve into a career. Think about things that you just enjoy learning more about. If one still cannot settle on a degree plan, visit Student Services at 477-7921.
