WESTERN OBSERVES NATIONAL RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY WEEK

Western Oklahoma State College recently observed National Radiologic Technology Week, an annual celebration initiated by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) to commemorate the discovery of the x-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on November 8, 1895.

National Radiologic Technology week celebrates the hard work and important contribution medical imaging professionals make in patient care. Through their dedication and professionalism, radiologic technologists create the perfect image in health care.

Radiologic technologists are the medical personnel who perform diagnostic imaging exams and administer radiation therapy treatments. They are educated in human anatomy, patient positioning, exam techniques, equipment protocols, radiation biology and pathology, radiation physics, radiation safety and protection and patient care. During their medical imaging career, the radiologic technologist may choose to specialize in a specific imaging technique, such as bone densitometry, cardiovascular-interventional technology, computed tomography, mammography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine, quality management, sonography, general radiography or radiation therapy.

Western Oklahoma State College offers a two-year radiologic technology program.

Prospective students generally complete one year of general education requirements, in addition to, human anatomy and medical terminology before making application to the program.

Application packets are available online during the spring semester. Upon acceptance into the program, the student will extensively study all aspects of radiologic technology for two years.. Upon program completion, the student will earn an associate of applied science degree and be eligible to challenge the national registry exam.
