WESTERN TO HOST SUMMER SCIENCE ACADEMY

Western Oklahoma State College will host the “Summer Academy in Plant Biology and Genomics” again this summer for students will be in 8th or 9th grade next year. Students selected for the academy will study plant biology using a curriculum that integrates mathematics, science and technology education with field experiences The summer academy is free of charge and includes staying in Western’s residence halls from June 16-20.

Including an entry-level course in DNA science, this academy is designed especially for highly motivated students interested in expanding their knowledge of basic genetics and cell biology. Students are immersed in an environment of hands-on activities and a group research project on genetically modified foods. Laboratory experiments are designed to increase genetic literacy, encourage critical and creative thinking, and spark interest in the field of biotechnology. Through cloning and expressing Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), students work to extract and purify a jellyfish protein from genetically engineered bacteria.

The academy was funded through a grant awarded by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education with additional funding from the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation. See brochure and application below. For more information contact Elizabeth Wallace at 580-477-7761 or elizabeth.wallace@wosc.edu.
