A recent economic impact report shows that Western Oklahoma State College continues to play a vital role in driving economic growth in the State of Oklahoma. In fiscal year 2024, Western generated a total economic output of $61.95 million, supported 654 jobs, and contributed $31.68 million in wages statewide.

The study highlights how Western's operational expenditures and student and alumni spending create far-reaching economic benefits. These include direct impacts such as college operations and indirect and induced effects—ripple effects that stimulate additional job creation, income, and spending across other industries in the state.

In addition to economic Output and job creation, Western's presence significantly contributes to Oklahoma's fiscal health. In FY2024, the College was responsible for $2.18 million in state and local tax revenue, which included $1.17 million in income tax revenue and $1.01 million in sales tax revenue—largely driven by the wages and spending of WOSC employees, students, and alumni.

"Those of us who live in southwest Oklahoma know the vital role Western Oklahoma State College plays in driving economic growth in this part of the state.  However, having that impact quantified by an independent source is important.  According to an economic analysis conducted by the University of Cincinnati Economics Center, for every $1 the college receives in state appropriations, it generates $10.71 in total economic output. This significant return on investment underscores Western's value as an engine of regional prosperity—supporting local jobs, strengthening businesses, and enhancing the overall economic health of the communities it serves," said WOSC President Dr. Chad Wiginton.

Western received $5.78 million in state funding during FY2024, which returned a high-value yield of nearly $62 million in economic activity—a testament to the college's strong return on investment for Oklahoma taxpayers.

Economic Impact Breakdown:

  • Total Economic Output: $61.95 million
  • Jobs Supported: 654
  • Wages Supported: $31.68 million
  • Fiscal Impact: $2.18 million (Income Tax: $1.17 million | Sales Tax: $1.01 million)
